Escuela Katitawa

"SKY, Sumak Kawsay Tachay, is our motto
In Kichwa it translates to Beautiful, Life, Knowledge
and the acronym in English conveys that with education,
the sky is the only limit to one's dreams." Robert

Katitawa was a school based in Salasaka, Ecuador. This is a small indigenous village on the edge of the Andes mountains. The school was built  in 1997 and run by a man named Robert until his passing in November 2016.

The school has since closed and they now offer English and language classes at the school library operated solely by volunteers and the local Manguiwa community. There is a donation link at the bottom of this page.

The children who attended ranged in age from four to twelve.  This was one of the few schools in Ecuador that provided classes in the native language Kitchwa.

The Ministry of Education in Ecuador decided that volunteers could no longer teach at primary schools. As a result, the school shut down. There were not enough teachers in the area, nor could they afford to pay them on solely the donations of others- without government aide. All the students were sent by their parents to neighboring schools and continue to thrive.

Anyone who has had the blessed opportunity to volunteer here can testify that Katitawa had a special kind of magic. No matter how lost you were when you arrived, you left feeling found.

We will all miss our beloved days at Katitawa, our time with the students, the beautiful blend of cultures, and the view from Casa Pachamama. But it lives on in Manguiwa.
